The official World Cornhole Organization World Cup took place in the beautiful Charléty stadium in Paris. A very unique location for a unique event. Never before, so many countries participated in World Cup. No less than 14 different countries were part of this year’s World Cup.
With the draw on Thursday night, teams were placed into two groups of 7 teams. Within their group, every country played against all other countries within their group. Country teams consisted of 4 players and each round was played by playing three matches. Two singles matches and a doubles match.
After the group stage on Friday, the best 4 countries of each group made it into the final knockout round. The quarter finales were played on Saturday afternoon. A critical match for all countries as reaching the semi finals meant that a team would play live on the broadcast.
And what kind of semi finals did we see in Paris. The four best countries in the world played each other. In the first semi final, the USA played against the German team. A strong German team gave the American ACL Pro’s a pretty good match, but in the end it was Frank Modlin and Tony Smith who got their team into the final.
After that match, team Canada played against the home team: France. And what a match-up this was. The Canadian team took the lead, however the French team did not give up. After winning the second singles match, they got the victory in the deciding doubles match.
That lead to a final between North America and Europe. Team USA vs Team France. The big favourites showed they were favourites for a reason. In the end, Team USA was simply too strong. Tony Smith, Trey Burchfield, Frank Modlin and Hunter Thorne got the big trophy for America.
A big step forward for the sport of Cornhole to play at such a location with so many different countries. The WCO World Cup will be back next year!
